The Department of Communication offers a broad and integrated approach to communication studies that embraces the traditions of the humanities, the convergence of rhetorical and communication theory, and the relations among aesthetic, humanistic, and scientific approaches to inquiry. Students are encouraged to examine the pragmatics of rhetorical and communication theory in such settings as business and industry, government, education, medicine and health care, media, the arts, and the family. The department offers course work leading to the Master of Arts degree and the Doctor of Philosophy. The Institute for Interpretive Human Studies supports visiting speakers and activities in the college that are associated with interpretive studies.
