INAUGURAL MEETING

Overview

Many members of the international qualitative inquiry community expressed a desire and need for an organization. Taking up this challenge, a meeting to form a steering committee for the International Association of Qualitative Inquiry (IAQI) was held on May 2-5, at the Third International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Vision: To form an international association of qualitative researchers that can actively speak on behalf of the interests, concerns and furtherance of qualitative inquiry throughout the world.

Goals

Short Term

• Develop a working association structure and constitution, ensuring fair and accessible regional input.

Long Term

• Shared learning, advocacy and lobbying on behalf of qualitative research methods and findings, towards a broader social justice agenda.

Outcomes

Membership

• The conference attendees acclaimed themselves as inaugural members of the International Association of Qualitative Inquiry

Committees

• The meeting established two primary steering committes. The Constitutional Development Committee will work on a constitutional charter to present to the general membership for ratification at the 2008 IAQI meeting. Volunteers on the International Advisory Committee will serve as a consulting body for the Constitutional Development Committee, and represent the IAQI in their home regions.

Acting director

• Norman Denzin was acclaimed as acting director of the IAQI

Rational: Many members of the international qualitative inquiry community have expressed a desire and need for an organization. Taking up this challenge, a meeting to form a steering committee for the International Association of Qualitative Researchers (IAQR) will be held on May 5, from 5-6pm in the Illini Union. All conference participants are invited and encouraged to attend this meeting and offer their input into this important venture.
