We carry out research and evaluation across all sectors of education and in activities concerned with learning outside the traditional boundaries of institutions such as schools and universities. We have a growing body of funded research projects and internationally recognized researchers. We believe that inter-disciplinarity and partnership working are central to development and change. This is reflected in our publications record. We have a growing national and international reputation for excellent standards of inquiry, analysis and reporting. We are formally linked with the International Institute of Qualitative Inquiry at the University of Illinois (at Urbana-Champaign) and the University of Valencia. In addition we work with thirteen European member states supporting and researching the experiences of beginning teachers.

All academic staff and research students belong to one of six research groups , which mentor and support research activity. Some staff are active in more than one of these groups. Research students lead their own Doctoral Study Group and are active in publishing their work. The Faculty of Education, Community and Leisure, of which we are a part, is rated ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding Features’ by OFSTED for its teacher training programmes. Wherever possible this teaching is research informed.

The research culture is supported through a Research Seminar SeriesFaculty Research Conference and Research Support Group . CERES is co-directed by Professors Mark Brundrett and Ian Stronach .
